It’s Laura Welter, here. For the next twenty-seven months I plan on being in Turkmenistan as a Peace Corps volunteer, teaching English and training English teachers. I’ve started this blog to help me keep in touch with the many people I will be missing while away. Also, it is a start toward completing my part of that Third Goal of the Peace Corps: “To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of all Americans.” I figure I am going to want to keep track of my experiences, I might as well share them with the universe! Please: read, ruminate, comment, share, enjoy.

  1. I have a question for you. Are you still in Turkmenistan? My fiance was in peace corps there from 06-08. He gave me a camel hair bracelet from there to protect me from the evil eye and it fell off. I would love to send you a package of things from the US that you miss in exchange for one of those bracelets. Any interest? It would mean a lot to me to be able to replace the bracelet. You cant just get them anywhere.

    • I’d love to send you a camel hair bracelet – I am actually resigning from my post this week, so there aren’t many things I’ll be missing soon. But I would love to send you the bracelet anyhow – what did yours look like (was it a hairy number, what colors, how wide)?

  2. OMG FOR REAL?! I have been searching for like a year for one of these!!! Mine was like an inch wide and had red and orange in it. It was hairy, and itchy… but did protect me from the ‘evil eye’ :p
I am not sure whether or not to be sad or glad for you leaving your post from what I have heard from my fiance. Your blog title says it all really. I bet you are excited to be coming back stateside. It hasnt changed much in the last year and a half. no worries. :)
